Since 1974, passionate Griffith community volunteers have dedicated their time each summer to celebrating and sharing their love of fine art with Northwest Indiana.
Our History
In 1974, inspired by a vision from the Griffith Park Board and the leadership of Mary Campbell, an exciting idea took shape: a celebration of fine art in Griffith’s Central Park.
A group of dedicated volunteers who shared a passion for arts and culture quickly came together to make it happen. Their new venture, A Park Full of Art, was born. Charles VanGorp was named the first chairman, and Griffith High School art teacher Charles Ricks joined the team as a consultant. After the inaugural show, Ricks stepped into the role of chairman, guiding the event with dedication and heart for many years.
What began as a small but spirited gathering of just a few dozen artists and a handful of committee members has grown steadily over the decades. While some of the original volunteers remain involved, many new committee members have joined the effort, helping carry the tradition forward. The show continues to be a juried event, maintaining clear standards and guidelines to ensure the community experiences high-quality, inspiring artwork each year.
In the early 1980s, the organization expanded its mission by establishing a scholarship program for Griffith High School seniors pursuing studies in the fine arts. A dedicated scholarship committee reviews acceptance letters and portfolios to support the next generation of artists.
A Park Full of Art operates as a nonprofit organization, funded through artists’ entry fees that helps to sustain the event and support its educational initiatives.
Today, the show has grown into a vibrant regional attraction. Hundreds of visitors attend the two-day event each year, exploring artwork from artists representing communities across the United States alongside talented local creators. What began as a simple idea in the park has blossomed into a beloved tradition celebrating creativity, community and the power of the arts.
